DIY Headlight cleaning guide for your car

Despite regular car cleaning, your car headlight lens can get foggy and yellowish over time. This makes your car look old and could make driving dangerous. The good news is: you can restore the damage and make your car headlight lens look as good as new.

Here is the step by step process that will help you clean and restore the looks of your car headlight-

Preparation

Before you make any move on your car headlight lenses, park the car in a shaded place and gather all the necessary equipment for cleaning. Here are the things that you will need:

-Masking Tape
-Sand Paper of 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit.
-Headlight lens polishing compound
-Wax
-UV sealant
-Washing towel

It’s best if you get a car wash before starting the process.

Apply Masking Tape

The first thing you need to do is apply the masking tape around the headlight lens. The purpose of applying the masking tape is to protect the paint around the headlight lens from an accidental scratch.

Rinse and Clean the Headlight

Now rinse the headlight and clean it up. You can use a headlight cleaning compound for a better result but using toothpaste with baking soda be an alternative as well.

Use sandpaper

This is the most important stage in this car care process. In this stage, you will have to sand the lenses of the headlight starting with the 1000 grit sandpaper. Here are the things to remember when sanding:

-Always sand in a single direction
-Keep the surface wet while sanding

After using the 1000 grit sandpaper switch to 1500 grit and then to 2000 grit. Wash and wipe the headlight every time after sanding with a paper.

Polish

After you are done sanding, polish the headlight lenses with polishing compound. Polish in a circular motion and wait for it to dry.

Wax and UV sealant

Once you polished the headlight you can apply wax on it. Applying wax will add an extra protective layer. After waxing apply UV sealant which will protect the headlight lens from the sun rays. This way the glossy look of your car headlight will sustain for a longer period. Do not get a car wash within 24 hours of applying UV sealant.
